Bengali was introduced as a discipline of academic study at the general level in
Harishchandrapur College in the year 2008. The general department began to function in the morning
shifts of Pipla High School. It started with 85 students and a part-time teacher, the college
being located in the vicinity of the borders of Bihar. In order to enhance the demand and interest
in taking up Bengali as an academic discipline, the Department worked tirelessly to organize
classes regularly, and was able to initiate a course at the Honours level for students of Bengali
in the year 2010. Presently the department comprises with dedicated four faculty members with
several students.
